As the leading WordPress agency we have seen a sharp rise in companies who have been on a Drupal framework looking to migrate to a WordPress website. With the imminent discontinued support in Jan 2025. We felt it was appropriate to put together a guide for those who are on Drupal 7 and what it means going forward.
The Background to Drupal 7
Drupal 7 is a version of Drupal, an open-source content management system (CMS) that was fairly widely used to build and manage websites in the B2B and B2C websites. Released in 2011, Drupal 7 brought significant improvements over its predecessor, Drupal 6, and was a popular choice for many organisations due to its flexibility, scalability, and extensive community support.
The current situation with Drupal 7
Although Drupal 7 was widely adopted and appreciated, it is now approaching the end of its support. Originally scheduled for end-of-life in November 2021, the support has been extended multiple times due to its large user base, with the final end-of-life date now set for January 5, 2025. After this date, Drupal 7 will no longer receive official updates or security fixes, encouraging users to migrate to other solutions such as WordPress or the latest version of Drupal.
We have no idea how long other versions of Drupal will be supported going forward. We have previously worked with the Drupal framework but as an agency took the view that we were no longer to code in Drupal. Since focusing on WordPress 5 years ago. We have migrated a number of clients’ websites into the WordPress framework and understand both platforms.
