What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser. They let the site remember things, such as your cookie choices, or count how many people visit.
Websites can also store information in your browser in other ways, such as “session storage”. This policy covers those too, and we call them all “cookies” here.
Some cookies are set by us. Others are set by companies whose services we use, such as Google. These are called third-party cookies.
This policy sits alongside our Privacy policy, which explains how we look after your personal information.
The cookies we use
We use two kinds, which we sort into the same categories as our cookie banner.
Necessary
These make the website work, and remember the choices you make on it. The law allows us to use them without asking, because the site can’t work properly without them. You can block them in your browser, but parts of the site may then stop working.
Optional
These help us understand how people use the site, and which of our adverts work. We only set them if you say yes in our cookie banner. If you say no, or ignore the banner, they stay off.
We use optional cookies for:
- Analytics: counting visits and seeing which pages are useful, so we can improve the site.
- Performance: seeing how people reach the site, including from our emails, and recognising people who have joined our newsletter or opened one of our documents when they return.
- Advertisement: seeing whether people who clicked one of our adverts went on to contact us.
Changing your mind
If you withdraw your consent, we stop setting optional cookies from then on. Some may stay in your browser until they expire, and you can delete them yourself (see “Controlling cookies in your browser”).

Other services that receive your IP address
Some services on this site don’t set cookies, but your browser still connects to them, so they see your IP address:
- Adobe Fonts supplies the fonts on this site.
- CookieYes loads our cookie banner.
- Vercel hosts the site.
The Privacy policy explains these.
Controlling cookies in your browser
